PTs are "Firefighters for a Day"

(Tucson, AZ Nov 1, 2005) Have you wondered what it’s like to save someone in a burning building? Physical therapists from SATnet had a chance to experience a day in the life of a firefighter at an awareness day hosted by the City of Tucson’s Regional Public Safety Academy.
Captain Laura Ritter-Baker, designed this special training for SATnet therapists so they could fully understand what challenges firefighters face on a daily basis.
The physical therapists began the day with an 8-event Candidate Physical Ability Test. Wearing a 50 pound vest, the PT’s first used a stairclimber, then dragged a firehose around steel drums, striking a sledge hammer on a force meter, and moved a mannequin across a parking lot, to simulate knocking down a door or wall and moving a person to safety.
Next with standard firefighter protective clothing and breathing equipment, they crawled into a smoking room to rescue a “victim” and safely get out of the building without leaving any firefighters stranded. PT’s then swung power rams and spreaders to force open a wrecked automobile and rescue a large victim.
The morning wrapped up with a discussion on how best to apply the simulation in designing rehabilitation plans for injured recruits and firefighters to ensure they can safely and effectively return to their jobs.
Thank you to Captain Ritter-Baker, Wayne Peate, M.D. and the Tucson Fire Department staff for this invaluable experience.
And thank you to Gerry Bates for use of the photographs.

"Mother Knows Best," Says Physical Therapist
(Tucson AZ March 18, 2005)
“Remember when your Mother told you to stand up tall and get some exercise?” Jodi Sawicki Roberts, PT, asked the 50-person audience at today’s first annual Tucson Estates Health Fair. “You should have listened to her.”
Roberts, a physical therapist with MDR Spine and Sports Physical Therapy, and a young mom herself, recommends that exercise—walking, jogging, stair-climbing, weight-lifting, aerobics, tennis, dancing, or some other form of weight-bearing or resistance exercise — be done regularly to bring long-term benefits. The U.S. Surgeon General recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day.
Good posture can’t prevent osteoporosis, but it may help minimize the effects of the disease, and help you maintain an active lifestyle. A physical therapist may prescribe certain exercises to improve your posture, body mechanics and balance. These can help you improve muscle strength and flexibility while increasing your mobility.
If you are over 50, or have a medical condition, Roberts suggests that you see your doctor and consult with a physical therapist before starting any exercise program.
