Local Physical Therapists Join National Effort to Promote Walking for Charitable Causes

October in Tucson marks the beginning of “walking for causes” – diabetes, disability, cancer, and arthritis to name a few. Local physical therapists are celebrating October as National Physical Therapy Month by joining with the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) in encouraging people to get their “hearts pumping” for “heart-felt” causes by offering advice and a free APTA full-color brochure, “Walking for Exercise”.
When signing up for these walking events, many people don’t realize they will be walking a lot more than their bodies are used to,” advises Don Snyder, PT, at Ft. Lowell Physical Therapy. “While walking is a great way to exercise, injury can occur.” Physical therapists are experts in movement and function and can provide tips on how to walk safely and avoid injury.
Tips for starting your walking program include: start slow and easy, set aside time each day, pick a fun and safe place to walk, monitor your progress. If you are a male over 40 or female over 50 you should first consult your physician if you have any health concerns and consider a visit to a physical therapist.
Brochures can be picked up at member clinics, including Ft. Lowell Physical Therapy, 2560 E. Ft. Lowell Road, Tucson. They may also be requested by calling the network’s office at (520) 299-6392 or email jsmith@arizonapt.net.
