Showers? Work Out on the Couch!

APTA's Couch Potato Workout (PDF - 524 KB)
Has spring weather got you thinking about getting in shape? Start moving, even from the couch. Local physical therapists in Southern Arizona Therapy Network (SATnet) have joined with the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) to put this year’s theme, “Get Fit for Life,” into play.
Spring brings a new interest in the outdoors and fitness. Start slowly, even on days with April showers. The APTA has developed a Couch Potato Workout (PDF - 524 KB), which can be done without leaving the family room. Keep your joints moving to prevent them from becoming stiff and sore. Your heart and lungs will also appreciate the activity.
Physical therapists support the U.S. Surgeon General’s recommendation that adults should get 30 minutes of physical activity every day. It doesn’t have to be organized sports or gym classes. Lifestyle activities like walking or climbing stairs have been proven to reduce the likelihood of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity.
The Couch Potato Workout features exercises such as the Hail Mary Back and Arm Extensor, which works on the upper back and shoulders; the Couch Potato Kick Off Lateral Leg Lift, for hips and buttocks muscles; and Touch Back Wall Squats, for working thighs, hips, back, and abs.
